Social Work Day at the U.N.

On April 1, 2019, the United Nations hosted 250 social workers from across the US and 3 countries. Speakers ranging from H.E. Georgi Panayotov, Ambassador, Permanent Mission of Bulgaria to the U.N. to Aniruddha Kulkarni, a Child Protection Specialist, UNICEF New York spoke to the filled ECOSOC Chamber at the United Nations HQ. The theme for the day was Strengthening Human Relationships: Policies and Programs to Protect Children with subjects such as international labor standards as it pertains to children, female genital mutilation, forced marriages, and child protection among the migrant population to name a few. “No country, community or individual should be left behind”, representative of the U.N.’s Division of Social Development. It is clear from this gathering that social workers are a force in global decisions.
